Social Justice

God’s Character – He is a God of Justice!

We are all made in the image of God and God values every human life – human life is seen to display a transcended sacred dignity. Every human is precious; every human deserves dignity and care. He is a God of Justice and in the Book of Psalms, majority of the places where there is a mention of Justice, it is not about humans but about ‘Who God is and what He does.’

Psalm 146: 5-9 “Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob, The Lord Who executes justice for the oppressed, who gives food to the hungry. The LORD sets the prisoners free; the LORD opens the eyes of the blind. The LORD lifts up those who are bowed down; the LORD loves the righteous. The LORD watches over the sojourners; he upholds the widow and the fatherless, but the way of the wicked he brings to ruin.”

God’s expression of Justice is so radical that it erases physical ailments; opens the eyes of the blind, sets the oppressed and captives free. Wherever you see acts of justice, mercy and humility happening in the world; we see God’s will at work.

It is His will that such as these are cared for; called the “Quartet of the vulnerable” – are the widows, orphans, immigrants and the poor. “Thus says the LORD of hosts, Render true judgments, show kindness and mercy to one another, do not oppress the widow, the fatherless, the sojourner, or the poor, and let none of you devise evil against another in your heart.” Zechariah 7: 9-10

Biblical Vision for Social Justice

Jeremiah 9:23-24 – Thus says the LORD: “Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the LORD who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the LORD.”

God did not stop by doing just acts of kindness but He made Laws which protected the rights of such people and we know that bringing justice to these people is God’s heart and it delights Him.

Micah 6:8 – He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness and to walk humbly with your God.

The world boasts on wisdom, power and wealth – the whole world system is founded and driven by these three forces. But the Lord is commanding us not to focus on the world but focus and boast on this truth; that “you know Him and understand His ways” – to express steadfast love, and to bring justice and righteousness in the lives of people, communities and world at large.

For Jesus to do justice and love God were two sides of the same coin – Matthew 22:36-39

We need to identify the “Quartet of the Vulnerable” in our city and be engaged. This is the very nature of God and the Bible clarifies us on, what is the definition of, “Who is a good man?”  The answer – “The one who delivers Justice, motivated with Mercy and with a posture of Humility.” We firmly believe that on the last day this will be important key result areas on which we will be appraised.

Social Justice should become an integral part of us as an individual and corporate life of the Church.
